학교가 창의성을 죽인다.(2006, Ken Robinson)

TED로 영어공부하기 1일차

2006년 제목에서 확실하게 알 수 있듯이 학교가 창의력을 얼마나 억압하는지에 대한 내용입니다.

스피커는 영국의 교육학자이신 켄 로빈슨님이십니다.

영국 발음이 아직 제  귀에는 많이 어색했지만 열심히 들어보았습니다.

Words & Expressions

1. running through

"There have been three themes running through the conference, which are relevant to what I want to talk about."

"이 강연에는 세 개의 주제가 있습니다. 그 세 가지 주제 모두 제가 오늘 강연할 내용과 겹치는 부분이 있습니다. "

2. extraordinary

"One is the extraordinary evidence of human creativity in all of the presentations that we've had and in all of the people here. "

"첫째는 우리가 본 강연들에서 나타나고 또 여러분들이 보여주고 있는 인류의 창의력입니다. "

(TED가 여러 강의가 연달아 진행되는 방식이라는 것을 여기서 알 수 있었습니다. 테알못ㅠ)

3. in term of A, play out

"The second is that it's put us in a place where we have no idea what's going to happen, in terms of the future. No idea how this may play out."

 "둘째는 창의성이라는 것이 미래의 관점에서 보면 무슨 일이 일어날지, 어떤 식으로 전개될지 아무도 알 수 없다는 점입니다."

4. blood run from their face

"you can see the blood run from their face."

"상대방의 얼굴이 바로 창백해지는 게 보여요."

4. nonetheless, capacities

"Third part of this is that we've all agreed, nonetheless, on the really extraordinary capacities that children have, their capacities for innovation."

"셋째 주제는 어린이들이 무한한 재능을 가지고 있다는 것에 대해 모두들 동의한다는 것이죠. 혁신을 창조하는 재능이 있습니다."

5. contention, literacy, treat A with the same status

"My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status."

"저의 주장은 이제 창의력을 읽기,쓰기와 같은 수준으로 다루어야 한다는 것입니다."

6. 문맥 파악

Teacher: What are you drawing?

선생님: 무엇을 그리고 있니?

Girl: I'm drawing a picture of God.

소녀: 신을 그리고 있어요

Teacher: But nobody knows what God looks like.

선생님: 아무도 신이 어떻게 생겼는지 모르지 않니?

Girl: They will, in a minute.

소녀: 이제 곧 알게 될 거에요.

(They will, 알게 된다는 내용이 담겨있는 것을 바로 알아듣기는 어렵더군요...)

7. take a chance, have a go

"What these things have in common is that kids will take a chance. If they don't know, they'll have a go"

"이런 이야기들은 보시면 어린이들은 공통적으로 모르더라도 시도를 합니다."

8. come up with A

"What we do know is, if you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up with anything original"

"그렇지만 한가지 확실한 것은 잘못하거나 실수해도 괜찮다는 마음이 없다면 신선하고 독창적인 것을 만들어 낼 수는 없습니다"

9. At the top is/are A, then B at the bottom C

"At the top are mathematics and languages, then the humanities, and at the bottom are the arts."

"맨 위에는 수학과 국어, 언어학이 있고 그 아래는 인문학이고, 그 아래 마지막으로 예술이 들어가죠."

Closing

좋은 표현이나 단어들을 정리하면서 뭔가 TED 강연의 주제도 한번에 관통하고 싶었지만 어렵네요.

빨리 영어 실력이 늘어서 관객들 웃을 때 같이 웃었으면 좋겠네요
